The Opportunity:

As the Head of Science, you will lead the department in delivering outstanding results at GCSE and A level, ensuring Science remains central to the curriculum. You will drive improvements in student attainment and expand the school’s co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, inspiring students to pursue further education in Science.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance Science teaching and learning across all key stages.
  • Ensure high-quality outcomes in Science, with a focus on increasing uptake and achievement at KS4 and KS5.
  • Support and manage Science staff, promoting a positive and motivating department culture.
  • Work closely with the school to integrate Science into the broader curriculum and co-curricular activities.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, providing targeted support to improve attainment and engagement.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to align Science department goals with the school’s strategic vision.
  • Promote a restorative behaviour management approach within the department.
  • Expand the department’s extra-curricular and outdoor learning opportunities.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven leadership experience in a Science department within a secondary school setting.
  • Strong track record of delivering high academic outcomes in Science at both GCSE and A level.
  • Experience in curriculum development and staff management.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and supporting students with diverse needs.
  • Knowledge of restorative practice and behaviour management strategies.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading departmental strategies for improving student attainment and engagement.
  • Familiarity with outdoor education and extra-curricular programme development.
  • Experience working within an academy trust or multi-academy trust.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with senior leadership and external partners.
