The Opportunity:

As a Learning Mentor (Autism Specialist), you will play a vital role in supporting autistic pupils and helping them thrive in a structured and inclusive learning environment. Your expertise will be used to develop tailored strategies that enhance learning, independence, and emotional wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver highly specialist support tailored to the unique needs of autistic pupils.
  • Identify and respond to emerging needs such as sensory overload, anxiety, or communication challenges using evidence-based strategies.
  • Adapt and co-deliver curriculum content using approaches such as TEACCH, structured teaching, social stories, and visual supports.
  • Design and lead personalised learning programmes aligned with EHCP/IEP targets.
  • Track pupil progress and contribute to multi-agency reviews to improve outcomes.
  • Support pupils in emotional regulation, communication, and wellbeing to build resilience and self-management.
  • Work in partnership with families, teachers, and external specialists to ensure consistent support.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Significant experience supporting autistic children or young people, ideally within specialist settings.
  • Advanced knowledge of autism, including sensory processing, theory of mind differences, communication needs, and executive functioning.
  • Relevant autism-specific qualifications or training (e.g., NAS modules, PG Cert Autism, specialist SEND training).
  • Confidence in working autonomously and making informed professional judgements.
  • Strong communication, assessment, and behaviour-support skills based on evidence-based practice.

Preferred

  • Experience leading groups or mentoring colleagues.
  • Additional specialist certifications (e.g., Team Teach, Makaton, PECS).
