The Opportunity:

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and other special educational needs. Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and other special educational needs in a classroom setting
  • Assist in delivering a bespoke and accessible curriculum tailored to individual needs
  • Communicate effectively with students, using a variety of methods such as Makaton, picture symbols, and PODD
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists to support students’ learning and development
  • Help manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours using positive strategies and understanding of autism
  • Adapt and innovate in delivering lessons using a range of tools and resources
  • Promote a safe, secure, and inclusive environment for all students
  • Encourage and support students in developing communication and social skills

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Experience working with students who are autistic and have additional needs
  • Ability to communicate with non-verbal students using tools such as Makaton, PECs, and PODD
  • Experience supporting students with challenging behaviours and understanding the function of behaviour
  • Flexibility to work with students aged 4 through to 11
  • Creativity in developing and delivering lessons tailored to individual needs
  • Awareness of autism strategies such as TEACCH and attention autism

Preferred

  • Experience working in a classroom environment
  • Training or experience in special education or working with children with special needs
  • Knowledge of autism-specific teaching methods and strategies
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to supporting the holistic development of students
