The Opportunity:
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and other special educational needs. Your work will help students develop their abilities, build self-esteem, and achieve meaningful progress. Key Responsibilities:
- Support students with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and other special educational needs in a classroom setting
- Assist in delivering a bespoke and accessible curriculum tailored to individual needs
- Communicate effectively with students, using a variety of methods such as Makaton, picture symbols, and PODD
- Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists to support students’ learning and development
- Help manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours using positive strategies and understanding of autism
- Adapt and innovate in delivering lessons using a range of tools and resources
- Promote a safe, secure, and inclusive environment for all students
- Encourage and support students in developing communication and social skills
Qualifications & Skills:
Required
- Experience working with students who are autistic and have additional needs
- Ability to communicate with non-verbal students using tools such as Makaton, PECs, and PODD
- Experience supporting students with challenging behaviours and understanding the function of behaviour
- Flexibility to work with students aged 4 through to 11
- Creativity in developing and delivering lessons tailored to individual needs
- Awareness of autism strategies such as TEACCH and attention autism
Preferred
- Experience working in a classroom environment
- Training or experience in special education or working with children with special needs
- Knowledge of autism-specific teaching methods and strategies
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Commitment to supporting the holistic development of students
