The Opportunity:

As a School Counsellor, you will provide essential support to students, helping them navigate personal and academic challenges. This role is vital in ensuring a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where students can flourish.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide confidential, professional counselling and support sessions to students in line with ethical guidelines and safeguarding requirements.
  • Offer a drop-in clinic for pupils to access immediate support and guidance.
  • Offer supportive advice to staff regarding students who may be experiencing difficulties.
  • Promote a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students feel comfortable expressing their concerns.
  • Liaise with the school medical centre staff and implement necessary actions based on weekly observations.
  • Manage a caseload of pupils and prioritise referrals appropriately.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns through the appropriate channels, including MyConcern or the Director of Safeguarding if urgent.
  • Provide opportunities for parents and carers to discuss concerns regarding their child’s wellbeing.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • A recognised qualification in Counselling or Psychotherapy (minimum Level 4), with specific training in children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
  • Membership of, or accreditation with, a relevant professional body (e.g. BACP, NCS, UKCP, CPCAB).
  • Experience working with young and vulnerable children, ideally in a school environment.
  • Strong listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Resilience, patience, and a non-judgmental, empathetic attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills to build positive and professional relationships with staff, students, and parents.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and professional boundaries.

Preferred

  • Experience in a school or educational setting.
  • Familiarity with pastoral care and student support systems.
  • Experience with safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Training in trauma-informed care or mental health first aid.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive hourly rate of £20.66 plus statutory holiday pay.

  • Flexible working pattern, with 16 hours per week during term time (37 weeks).
